Color of the Month: Yellow

This month we are seeing a large use of yellow as an accent color. When put up against neutrals, particularly greys, yellow becomes an exciting and unexpected highlight. Accessories, lighting, and rugs are all great items to expose a splash of yellow.

A fantastic example of yellow as an accent color is in the Canyon Bowl in Mustard Yellow from CB2. This minimal use of such a vibrant color attracts the eye without overwhelming the design. We would highly recommend this item if you are looking for an interesting centerpiece for a coffee or side table.

Another easy way to bring this growing trend to your design is to simply add a new throw to your existing living room arrangement. We would suggest the Cable Throw in Yellow from CB2. It is a fantastic tone of yellow, with a fabulous, comfy texture. This will surely refresh your design without much effort at all.

Area Rugs

Area rugs can play a huge part in the design of a room. Modern, graphic rugs can easily and instantly add tons of color to a space. The most common problem people run into is choosing a rug that is too small for their design. If you are looking for an area rug, make sure the rug is big enough to at least run under the 1st two legs for your furniture. In other words, don’t have an area rug floating in the middle of all of your furniture; make sure it becomes a part of the space. Graphic area rugs can add a lot of character to a contemporary space. One of our favorites is the Thomas Paul Parasols Rug in Dove/Gold. This rug has a very large, graphic print in multiple shades of grey and yellow. These colors can pull out from similarly colored accessories, making the room seem much more whole.

We found this great area rug option on All Modern. There are many great places to look for contemporary area rugs online. Some useful suggestions would be CB2, West Elm, Crate and Barrel, and Cantoni. There is a huge availability of great area rugs to find online!

February Pick of the Month

This month we have two favorites to share with you; a lamp and a chair! These are both fantastic items at even more fantastic prices. We have found that they work nicely in many different room styles, and can add a very unique touch.

First, we have the Colletor’s Lamp from Lamps Plus. This lamp is extremely versatile, as it allows you to fill its glass cylinder with anything you want! For example, if you are designing a beach inspired room, you could easily fill this lamp with sand and shells- maybe even ones you’ve picked up yourself over the years! If you are looking for a more zen feel, we would suggest river stones, as their slight differences in texture from one another add a calming aesthetic. At $99.99 this is a find that will not only add a nice touch to the room you are working on now, but could be re-filled and moved to a new room in the future with a completely different look!

Our next pick of the month is the Socrates Leather Chair from Plummers. Available in both the “Cognac” (shown below) and the “Black Bycast Leather.” This chair has clean, unique lines that add a sophisticated touch to a contemporary room. It’s detailed stitching makes the chair feel like a steal at only $395.00! The scale is smaller making it perfect, as we find that most people tend to buy furniture that is too big for their space, making the room feel small and crowded. This intelligent design creates a chair that fits in any room without overwhelming your design. The leather is great in either color, with a beautiful grain. This chair is the perfect solution to your seating problem.

Vanities: Custom or Pre-Made?

When designing a bathroom, deciding whether to purchase a pre-made vanity or order a custom one can be difficult. Both of these options have positive and negative aspects. For pre-made vanities, the cost will remain low and the project can be finished faster, but you will be limited to the designs and styles available in whichever store you choose. Custom vanities allow much more creativity and specification; you will have the oppertunity to create the unique vanity you envision in your space. The negative here is that this can cost roughly 40% more than if you were to buy a pre-made alternative.

When deciding between custom and pre-made vanities the most important factor is the size of your bathroom. If you are working with a larger space, a custom vanity is more appropriate for your project. Smaller spaces are more easily matched with pre-made vanity, as the average pre-made vanity (even double sink options) are designed for smaller bathrooms. When you are dealing with a large square footage, a custom vanity will allow you to make better use of your space for you specific needs and wants.
