When anyone thinks of brilliant visionaries in the world of design one of the most recognizable names in modern american furniture is Eames. What makes Eames furniture more unique than its brilliant innovation is that the name Eames…is plural. Eames furniture, or more famously known as “Eames Chairs” had two creative genius minds behind it, Ray and Charles Eames. When architect Charles Eames and designer Ray-Bernice Alexandra Kaiser married in 1941, the world of modern furniture was forever changed. Their unity of brilliance surpassed what was being done at the current time in terms of furniture design, graphic design, architecture, film, and art.
The duo is most famously known for their moulded plywood work with chairs and furniture where they remarkably sculpted plywood into curved, ergonomic seating that was so interestingly and beautifully made, it was hard to fathom that it was actually constructed from wood.
Ray and Charles virtually pioneered technologies such as mesh wire, resin, and fiberglass, which as we all know is used today to manufacture furniture all over the world. With such remarkable innovation with new technologies, the team went on to be the leading designers for the largest modern office furniture manufacturer in the world, Herman Miller.
So with the birthday of Charles Eames last week, we felt what better time to honor him and his wife for all their genius.
Here’s to you Charles….
